In Jungian psychology, the persona is the social mask a person presents to the outside world. The curated identity built to meet the expectations of family, culture, and profession. Jung saw the persona as necessary for social functioning but dangerous when mistaken for the whole self. The more rigidly the persona is maintained, the more the shadow accumulates beneath it.
In plain terms: The persona is the version of you that gets promoted, praised, and applauded. The shadow is everything you’ve had to exile to keep that version alive. Shadow work is the process of making peace with what you’ve hidden.
Q: What exactly is shadow work, and how can it help me?
A: Shadow work is the process of exploring parts of yourself that you usually keep hidden, like fears, insecurities, or past wounds. These ‘shadow’ parts influence your thoughts and behaviors without you realizing it. By bringing these hidden pieces into awareness, you can heal old patterns and regain control over your life.
